Big Island, Hawaii Wedding Photographer: Couple Cups

There’s something about a Big Island wedding that feels a little untapped, even now. Maybe it’s the way you can turn one corner and find black lava rock meeting the ocean, then drive a little farther and end up surrounded by lush palms, soft grass, and that easy tropical air Hawaii does so well. For couples planning from far away, it can feel like there are almost too many beautiful options. For us, that’s part of the magic.
What we love most about weddings here is how varied the island feels without ever losing that grounded, romantic sense of place. You can say your vows near dramatic lava fields, tuck your ceremony into a garden with ocean views, or find one of those lovely in-between spots where the landscape gives you both: texture, color, and room to breathe. The Big Island is full of perfect ceremony spots that don’t have to feel overdone. Some are bold and windswept, some are soft and tropical, and some feel like hidden gems you almost want to keep to yourself.
As a husband and wife photography and planning team, we’re always grateful to guide couples through those choices. We know the logistical side too: where the light falls beautifully, where guests will feel comfortable, and which locations let the scenery support the moment without stealing it. That balance matters. The setting should feel incredible, yes, but it should also feel like you.
And for Renata and Will, it absolutely did.
Renata & Will on the Big Island

The day began with a gentle, humid breeze and the lush, green backdrop that makes the Big Island so unique. The air was buzzing with a quiet, happy energy. One of the most beautiful aspects of an intimate wedding, Renata and Will had just 23 of their closest family and friends: is the way it allows for these small, deeply personal moments to take center stage.
We were lucky enough to witness a particularly touching scene just before the ceremony. Renata’s mother stepped in to help her daughter with the finishing touch: her veil. There is something so sacred about the transition from “daughter” to “bride,” and seeing the pride and love in her mother’s eyes as she smoothed the delicate lace was a highlight of the afternoon. These are the “untapped” moments of a wedding day that we live to capture: the ones that aren’t on a formal list but carry the weight of a lifetime of memories.
As a Big Island wedding photographer, I’ve learned that the most stunning photos often happen in these quiet pockets of time. It’s where the nerves settle and the reality of the commitment starts to sink in. Renata looked absolutely radiant, her hair and makeup perfected by the talented team at Kassi Bissman Beauty.
A Ceremony Steeped in Tradition and Heart

The ceremony unfolded in a setting that felt classic Hawaii: a lush green lawn, vibrant tropical florals by Daisy Dukes, and the vast Pacific stretching out to meet the horizon. The ceremony was officiated by Brian Ivans, who crafted a service that felt perfectly tailored to the couple.

Will had told us earlier that the moment he was looking forward to most was the ceremony itself: that singular point in time where they would finally say “I do” in front of their loved ones. Watching them stand together, it was impossible not to feel the weight of their journey. From a dating app and a language barrier to a ski lift in the moonlight, every trial and every good memory had led them here.

The intimacy of having only 23 guests meant that every person present was deeply connected to their story. There’s a certain logistical nuance to planning a small event like this; it requires a delicate balance of coordination and freedom. Sandra, our resident planner and coordinator at Big Island Elopements, loves working on these intimate Hawaii weddings because they allow us to create a truly seamless, stress-free experience for our couples. We want you to focus on the person at the end of the aisle, not the timeline.
Capturing the Connection: Portraits on the Coast

Once the “I dos” were said and the celebration officially began, we moved into family photos right at the ceremony spot. Renata and Will were clear about wanting to capture their core circle: parents, siblings, and nieces and nephews. We were more than happy to oblige, moving through the list with an easy rhythm so the couple could get to the part they were truly excited about: their portraits.
As the sun began its slow descent, we stole Renata and Will away for some quiet time as husband and wife. This is often our favorite part of the day as a Hawaii wedding photographer. The Big Island offers such a diverse range of backdrops, from dramatic lava rocks to hidden tropical groves. For Renata and Will, we focused on the interaction between their love and the raw beauty of the environment.

The way Will looks at Renata is exactly how he described it: star-struck. And the way she leans into him shows a comfort that doesn’t need words. We captured them walking along the coast, the wind catching Renata’s veil, and the golden hour light hitting them in that soft, buttery way that only happens in the islands. These portraits are more than just pictures; they are the visual representation of their “language-less” bond.
They had also specifically planned for sunset beach photos because they wanted a totally different vibe from the ceremony setting, and honestly, it was such a good call. Once we got them onto the sand, everything loosened up in the best way. They were smiling, dancing together, and just soaking in that golden hour energy like they had nowhere else to be.

Toasts, Tastes, and Tropical Vibes

That part of the day was a whirlwind of joy. The couple shared their first dance under the shade of the palms, and the energy was electric yet relaxed, exactly what you want for a destination elopement in Hawaii.
The ceremony space was beautifully styled with pieces from Kea & Loa, whose chic rentals added a touch of modern elegance to the tropical setting. From the cake cutting to the toasts, every moment was a celebration of how far they had come.

A Heartfelt Thank You to the Team
A wedding like this is always a team effort, and we’re so grateful for the talented people who helped make Renata and Will’s day feel so effortless and beautiful. A huge mahalo to Brian Ivans for such a heartfelt ceremony, Daisy Dukes for the lovely florals, and Kassi for making Renata look and feel amazing.
Working alongside kind, creative professionals like these is one of the best parts of what we do. We love this island, we love this wedding community, and we love helping couples create a day that feels authentic from beginning to end.
> “An amazing photographer and a true professional. From the very beginning, we felt comfortable and well guided. The wedding photos captured every emotion and special moment beautifully, and the beach photos were absolutely stunning. The quality, lighting, and attention to detail exceeded our expectations. We are so grateful to have these memories and highly recommend this photographer.”
