Waipio Valley is one of the most beautiful places on the Big Island. It’s not really a tourist-y place; usually it’s only the locals who have houses down in the valley, so a lot of people don’t even know about it, which is a shame. That being said, it is a bit of a challenging place to live because the road is very steep and difficult to get to, especially if it’s during the rainy season. It’s also difficult to get electricity there.

But, like anything difficult or “off the beaten path” so to speak, there’s an untapped beauty that feels like a well-kept secret. It’s the perfect place for a wedding and we were so lucky to be asked to document it for Elena and Kekoa (who goes by Koa).
We started the day with some “getting ready” shots of Elena and her bridesmaids. Then, we captured some detailed shots and got ready to head to the ceremony site. It was a quick but beautiful ceremony with the lush green valley in the background and a lovely floral arch made by small farmer and florist Lyla Mah.

After the “I do’s” it was time for family photos! Elena and Koa asked if they could get formal family photos taken before a lovely taro patch with Hi’ilawe in the background. Of course, we were more than happy to oblige! We love how the photos turned out, and we’re always happy to accommodate specific requests from the couple if they have them!

The couple also requested a few special “must have” photos. First, they asked for some pictures at the groom’s grandparents house in front of Hi’ilawe. They also wanted some photos by their banana patch on the farm and next to their favorite coconut trees. We loved how much these two feel connected to nature and their homestead and the pictures turned out so well.

The wedding was planned and coordinated by Sara from Jots of Thoughts and we loved working with her. Everything went so smoothly and it was the most beautiful Waipio Valley wedding we have had the chance to be a part of.
