Listen, we get it.
You hear “Hawaii” and your brain immediately goes to white sand, swaying palms, and maybe a coconut with a tiny umbrella. And hey, we love a good beach day as much as the next person. In fact, we’ve written entire guides on the best black sand beaches for eloping because they are, quite frankly, magic.
But the Big Island? She’s a different beast entirely.
She’s moody. She’s rugged. She’s got textures that look like they belong on the moon and jungles so green they’ll make your eyes ache. If you’re coming all the way to the middle of the Pacific to say “I do,” why settle for the same backdrop everyone else has?
Kris and I (hi, we’re the husband-wife team behind Couple Cups and Big Island Elopement) spend our days scouting the spots that most tourists drive right past. We’re talkin’ about the places where the air feels different: thicker, older, and infinitely more intimate.
If you want your wedding photos to feel like a documentary of an actual adventure rather than a stiff photoshoot on a resort lawn, you’re in the right place. Let’s get off the beaten path.
1. A Private Venue Overlooking Waipiʻo Valley: Cliffside and Completely Yours
There’s a certain kind of quiet that only happens when you step onto a private property above Waipiʻo Valley.
The cliffs drop away. The valley opens up in deep, layered greens. And beyond it all, the Pacific stretches out wide and blue. It feels hidden—because it is. This isn’t a crowded public lookout or a spot where strangers drift through your vows. It’s a private venue, and that exclusivity changes everything.
Why we love it for photos:
It gives you scale, drama, and privacy all at once. Kris can lean fully into his documentary approach here—capturing the way you move through the space, the wind catching linen, the pause before you reach for each other, the real in-between moments that make a gallery feel honest. The cliffside views of the valley and ocean do plenty on their own, so nothing has to feel forced.
The Vibe:
Intentional. Elevated. A little wild, but in a refined way. Think dramatic Hawaiian landscape with room to actually breathe and be present.
Pro Tip:
Because it’s a private venue, the experience feels much more relaxed and controlled than a public viewpoint. That means more space for a quietly emotional ceremony, uninterrupted portraits, and candid coverage that actually feels like your day—not a photoshoot with an audience.

2. Volcano National Park: Love on the Edge of Creation
Most people go to the Volcano to see the glow. We go for the steam.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a masterclass in contrast. You have the stark, obsidian-black lava fields of the Kīlauea caldera on one side and ancient fern forests on the other. It’s a place where the earth is literally making itself, and there is something incredibly poetic about starting a marriage in a place of constant creation.
The Shot:
The steam vents. On a cool morning or a rainy afternoon, the ground exhales clouds of white vapor. It creates a natural, ethereal haze that looks better than any smoke machine money can buy.
Logistics to Note:
This is a National Park, so permits are non-negotiable. Don’t worry, though: as your planners, we handle the boring paperwork while you focus on picking out your hiking boots. Also, it’s high altitude, which means it can get chilly. A stylish shawl or a leather jacket isn’t just a fashion statement here; it’s a survival tactic.
3. Puakea Ranch: Rustic Elegance Under the Trees
If your version of romance feels more old Hawaii than otherworldly lava, Puakea Ranch is such a gem.
Tucked into North Kohala, this historic ranch has that quiet, lived-in beauty you can’t fake. Ancient trees stretch overhead. Rustic details are everywhere. And the whole place feels intimate in the most effortless way—refined, relaxed, and deeply rooted in the land.
Why it’s Epic:
It’s the kind of venue that gives you character without stealing the moment. There’s old-Hawaii charm in every direction, from weathered wood to open lawns to the ranch’s timeless architecture. It feels elegant, but never stuffy, which makes it perfect for an intimate wedding that still wants a sense of place.
The “Quietly Intentional” Moment:
The light here is magic. It filters softly through the trees and lands in these beautiful pockets across the grass, which is exactly the kind of setting where Kris’s candid, documentary-style photography shines. Nothing has to be overly styled. Just the two of you moving through the space, being present, and letting the story unfold naturally.

4. Kahua Ranch: Rolling Green Hills and Ranch Romance
If beachy isn’t your thing, Kahua Ranch is the kind of place that makes people stop and say, wait—this is Hawaii?
Up here, the air feels cooler. The hills roll on forever. There’s mist hanging low over the pasture, cattle in the distance, white fences cutting through all that green, and a high-elevation ranch feel that leans more Ireland or Scotland than tropical postcard. It’s calm, open, and wildly romantic in that unforced kind of way.
Why it’s Epic:
Kahua Ranch is the ultimate unexpected Hawaii location. It’s wide open, cinematic, and full of movement without needing much from you. And when sunset starts to hit? Everything softens. You get that incredible golden light spilling over the hills, with the coastline glowing way off in the distance. It feels expansive and intimate at the same time.
The Photos:
This is exactly the kind of place where Kris’s documentary style shines. The landscape begs for wide-angle shots that show just how small and connected you are in the middle of it all—but the candid moments are just as good. Walking through the pasture, tucking into each other when the wind picks up, laughing between the quiet parts—Kris is always looking for the honest stuff, and Kahua gives those moments room to breathe.

5. Hilo Jungles & Waterfalls: The Lush Escape
You want green? We’ll give you green.
The Hilo side of the island is the “wet” side, which means the plant life is essentially on steroids. We’re talking giant hapu’u ferns, prehistoric-looking vines, and waterfalls that will leave you speechless.
Where to go:
If you’re dreaming about a dramatic rainforest backdrop, The Falls at Reed’s Island is such a good example of what makes this side of the island feel so cinematic. You get that lush, layered jungle look and the power of a real waterfall right behind you—intimate, immersive, and wildly romantic without feeling overdone.
The Reality Check:
It rains in Hilo. A lot. But here’s the secret: rain makes for incredible photos. It deepens the greens, makes the waterfall feel even moodier, and adds a layer of intimacy that a sunny day can’t touch. Embrace the damp. Let your hair get a little wild. Some of Kris’s favorite images from places like The Falls at Reed’s Island are the ones where everything feels alive—the mist in the air, the sound of the water, and the two of you tucked into your own little world.

Making it Effortless
At the end of the day, the “where” is just the stage. The “who” is what matters.
Our job: Sandra as your planner and coordinator and Kris as your photographer: is to make sure that the “where” is spectacular and the “how” is completely stress-free.
We handle the scouting, the timing, the permits, and the “what if it rains?” logistics. You just show up, look at each other, and take it all in. Whether you want to stand on a lunar lava field or in the heart of a vintage sugar town, we’re here to make sure your day feels like you.
Ready to start planning your Big Island adventure?
We don’t do “cookie-cutter.” We do personal. We do timeless. And we definitely do “beyond the beach.”
Drop us a note and let’s talk about which one of these spots is calling your name.
